One unit is 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol, which is the
amount of pure alcohol in a 25ml single measure of spirits (ABV 40%), a
third of a pint of beer (ABV 5-6%) or half a standard (175ml) glass of red
wine (ABV 12%). Apart from spirits, it's hard to tell how many units are in different types of drinks, as it
depends on both the size of
the drink and its strength or
percentage of alcohol by
volume (ABV).
No amount of alcohol is
fully safe. But for men, to drink no more than three
to four units per day on a regular basis will have a lower risk of any harm to health. For women the recommended limit is no more than two to three
units per day for a lower
risk of any harm to health.
